Diabetes Treatment in Hyderabad

India carries one of the largest diabetes populations in the world, and Hyderabad reflects that. What varies enormously is how well it is controlled. A prescription alone rarely settles blood sugar for long; what does is a plan built around one person’s eating, working hours, budget and other conditions, then revisited as those change.

Dr. Deepak Thiriveedi is a Consultant Endocrinologist and Diabetologist at AIG Hospitals, Gachibowli. He manages newly diagnosed diabetes, long-standing diabetes that has never come under control, insulin initiation, and diabetes complicated by thyroid, kidney or hormonal problems.

When to get tested

  • Passing urine more often, particularly at night, and constant thirst
  • Losing weight without trying, or unusual tiredness after meals
  • Cuts and infections that take a long time to heal
  • Tingling, burning or numbness in the feet
  • Blurred vision that comes and goes
  • A parent or sibling with diabetes, or a previous high sugar reading

What is treated here

  • Type 2 diabetes

From diagnosis through to long-term control, including the newer drug classes that also protect the heart and kidneys.

  • Type 1 diabetes

Insulin regimens, dose adjustment, hypoglycaemia management, and continuous glucose monitoring where it helps.

  • Prediabetes

The stage where progression can still be prevented. Structured lifestyle change, with medication only where the risk warrants it.

  • Diabetes in pregnancy

Gestational diabetes and pre-existing diabetes through pregnancy, where targets are tighter and monitoring is closer.

What the consultation involves

  1. 01

    A full picture

Sugar readings, HbA1c, current medication, weight, blood pressure, kidney function and any complications already present.

  2. 02

A regimen that fits your day

Medication chosen around your meal timings, work, travel and what you can sustain, not a standard template.

  3. 03

    Screening that prevents damage

Eyes, feet, kidneys and lipids checked on schedule, because the complications are far easier to prevent than to reverse.

Common questions

  • Should I see a diabetologist or a general physician for diabetes?

A general physician can manage straightforward type 2 diabetes well. An endocrinologist or diabetologist is the better choice if your HbA1c stays high despite treatment, if you are starting insulin, if you have type 1 diabetes, if you are pregnant, or if there is a second hormonal condition alongside it.

  • Can type 2 diabetes be reversed?

Type 2 diabetes can go into remission — normal sugar levels without medication — in a proportion of people, most often those diagnosed recently who achieve substantial weight loss. It is a realistic goal to discuss for some patients and an unrealistic promise for others, which is why it is worth assessing individually rather than assuming either way.

  • Does starting insulin mean my diabetes is severe?

No. Insulin is a tool, not a verdict. It is sometimes the fastest and safest way to bring very high sugars down, occasionally for a limited period, after which tablets may be enough again. Delaying it when it is needed causes more harm than starting it.

  • How often should HbA1c be checked?

Roughly every three months while treatment is being adjusted, and every six months once control is stable. HbA1c reflects the average of the last two to three months, so testing it more often than that tells you very little.
