Thyroid disorders are among the most common hormonal conditions in India, and among the most frequently missed. The gland sits at the base of the neck and sets the pace of the whole body, so when it runs slow or fast the symptoms turn up everywhere at once: weight, mood, energy, periods, hair, heart rate. What is treated here
Hypothyroidism
An underactive gland. Diagnosis, thyroxine dosing and the follow-up testing that gets the dose right rather than approximately right.
Hyperthyroidism
An overactive gland, including Graves’ disease. Anti-thyroid medication, monitoring, and referral for radioiodine or surgery when that is the better route.
Thyroid nodules
Ultrasound assessment, risk stratification, and fine-needle aspiration where it is warranted. Most nodules are benign and need watching, not treating.
Goitre and thyroiditis
Enlargement of the gland and post-viral or autoimmune inflammation, including Hashimoto’s, and thyroid problems arising in pregnancy.

Common questions
Which doctor should I see for thyroid problems in Hyderabad?
An endocrinologist. General physicians can start thyroxine, but an endocrinologist is trained specifically in the hormonal system and is the right person for nodules, hyperthyroidism, thyroid problems in pregnancy, or a case where the dose has never quite settled. Is thyroid medication lifelong?
For most people with hypothyroidism, yes, and the dose is adjusted over time rather than fixed forever. Some causes are temporary — thyroiditis after a viral illness often settles on its own, and thyroid changes in pregnancy may resolve afterwards. That distinction is worth establishing early, and it is one of the reasons a specialist assessment is useful.
Do I need to fast for a thyroid test?
No. TSH does vary slightly through the day and is usually a little higher in the early morning, so the practical advice is to give the sample at roughly the same time on each occasion, and to take thyroxine after the blood draw rather than before it.
Is a thyroid nodule cancer?
Usually not. Thyroid nodules are common, particularly in women, and the large majority are benign. The point of an ultrasound and, where indicated, a needle test, is precisely to separate the few that need attention from the many that only need periodic review.
